White pepper dominates the palate providing length and roundness with rich dark chocolate, plums, raspberry and cherry undertones that build on the palate, producing a very complex and enjoyable wine. The 1999 "F.H.T." follows in the widely acclaimed reputation of fine Shiraz produced from grapes grown exclusively on Best's Concongella vineyard. Great Western Shiraz is renowned for its longevity, however maturation in oak puncheons for over two half years prior to bottling makes this Shiraz very approachable even as a young wine. The label design is almost an exact replica of Henry Best's 1800's label. Viv Thomson notes: "As a result of severe spring frosts in 1998, the 1999 vintage was reduced to 20% of our average harvest. The meager yield combined with ideal ripening conditions produced a wine, which I consider unique, and comparable only with the best vintages of Shiraz produced from the Concongella vineyard. As such we have noted this vintage with the initials F.H.T. in the memory of my late father Frederick Harnill Thomson."
