Vineyard The fruit for the 2017 Gleeson Shiraz was sourced from the Schobers Vineyard in Auburn. This vineyard has deep red loam soils over a calcareous subsoil. Straw mulch is applied to the mid rows to retain soil moisture and encourage soil biology whilst shoot thinning is practiced moderating the canopy and yield.
Growing Conditions The 2017 vintage was shaped by heavy spring rains which set the vines up with big canopies and big crops. The wet spring also delayed berry development which ultimately led to a late vintage. The lateness of vintage culminated in fruit ripening in cooler conditions leading to a more delicate flavour profile and finer structures.
Winemaking The grapes are fermented in open fermenters for 8 days and transferred to barrel after the completion of malolactic fermentation. The barrels used for this wine were a one- and two-year French oak in a combination of hogshead and puncheon sizes.
Winemaking Notes This wine is a deep red colour. Displaying vibrant red fruit and aromas of blackberry and blueberry with hints of vanilla, coconut and fruit cake. The palate is soft and smoothly textured, with silky tannin and a fine length.
